Sympathique – Pink Martini

Also known as “Je ne veux pas travailler” this 1997 jazzy song from Pink Martini is inspired by a 1913 poem from Guillaume Apollinaire.

Words borrowed from that poem include:
“Ma chambre a la forme d’une cage” (My room is shaped like a cage) and
“Je ne veux pas travailler” (I don’t want to work)

Both the song and the poem represent a rejection of the adult world and a mundane existence. A hymn to personal freedom.
I also find it interesting that the song was released at a time when the 35 hrs work week was so important in France.
The song is often chanted in protests against labour laws as it captures the disillusions with employment or the workplace or the feeling of being confined in one’s job.
The mention of the million roses, can also imply that the subject is about getting over a heartbreak. The song could equally be about personal rebellion to get over the pain.

Ma chambre a la forme d’une cage
Le soleil passe son bras par la fenêtre
Les chasseurs à ma porte
Comme les petits soldats
Qui veulent me prendre

Me rend malade

Je ne veux pas travailler
Je ne veux pas déjeuner
Je veux seulement l’oublier
Et puis je fume

Je ne suis pas fière de ça
Vie qui veut me tuer
C’est magnifique être sympathique
Mais je n’le connais jamais

Je ne veux pas travailler, non
Je ne veux pas déjeuner
Je veux seulement l’oublier
Et puis je fume

Je n’suis pas fière de ça
Vie qui veut me tuer
C’est magnifique être sympathique
Mais je n’le connais jamais

Je ne veux pas travailler, non
Je ne veux pas déjeuner
Je veux seulement l’oublier
Et puis je fume

My room takes the form of a cage
The sun passes its arm by the window.
Bellboys at my door
Like toy soldiers
Who want to take me away.

I don’t want to work,
I don’t want lunch,
I just want to forget
And then I smoke.

I have already known the scent of love
A million roses
wouldn’t smell so sweet
Now, even a single flower in
my surroundings
Makes me sick.

I don’t want to work,
I don’t want lunch.
I just want to forget
, and then I smoke.

I am not proud of this
Life that wants to kill me.
It’s magnificent to be
likeable
But I never know how.

I don’t want to work, no
I don’t want lunch.
I just want to forget.
And then I smoke.

I am not proud of this
Life that wants to kill me.
It’s magnificent, to be
very nice
But I never know how.

I don’t want to work, no
I don’t want lunch.
I just want to forget.
And then I smoke
