This is a 1970 song from the French Singer song-writer Hubert Felix Thiefaine.
H-F Thiefaine is from the mountainous and working-class town of Dôle in the mountainous region of French Jura.
This is the story of 5 unemployed guys, indulging in sex and smoking cannabis with the local jointer’s daughter.
Bob Dylan is one of the main influences on Hubert Felix Thiefaine. And this song reminds me of Rita the Farmer’s Daughter in the sense that they both are folksy takes on traditional songs, changing the lyrics to decadent humour, provocative and surreal stories (La fille du coupeur de joint was initially a nursery rhyme), and talk about the local country-girl seducing young guys. However, both songs are quite opposite in the sense that Dylan did everything he could to get away from the seductive girl, whilst HF Thiefaine’s song is an ode to the main pleasure theme of the late 1960’s (sex and cannabis)
Elle descendait de la montagne
Sur un chariot chargé de paille
Sur un chariot chargé de foin
La fille du coupeur de joints
La fille du coupeur de joints
Elle descendait de la montagne
En chantant une chanson paillarde
Une chanson de collégien
La fille du coupeur de joints
La fille du coupeur de joints
Mais nous on était cinq chômeurs
A s’lamenter sur not’malheur
She was coming down the mountain
on a cart full of straws
on a cart full of hay
The jointer’s daughter
The jointer’s daughter
She was coming down the mountain
singing a coarse ballad,
a schoolboy’s song.
Ah, the jointer’s daughter
Ah, the jointer’s daughter
Well, we were five dolers
lamenting our misfortune
thinking we’d love to fuck
The jointer’s daughter
The jointer’s daughter
She was coming down the mountain
and she saw us on the
drywall
Then she said, “Hi, lads”
The jointer’s daughter
The jointer’s daughter
Here, she grabbed us by the
waist
then led us to her
straw
She did that Zeplin thing to us
The jointer’s daughter
The jointer’s daughter
Well, we were 5 dolers
treating ourselves to a slice of happiness
a bit of the old oom-pah-pah
The jointer’s daughter
The jointer’s daughter
Once we slipped passed the gate
She had us smoke some of her straw
Bloody Hell! It felt good
The jointer’s daughter
The jointer’s daughter
No more talk of looking for work
We were riding through the clouds
amongst the bunny rabbits.
The jointer’s daughter
The jointer’s daughter
She was coming down the mountain
on a cart full of straws
on a cart full of hay
The jointer’s daughter
(repeat)
