La Foule – Edith Piaf

This was 1936 Peruvian Waltz from Hugo del Carrill.
Edith Piaf wrote the French version in 1957.

The song is about a woman breaking up with her unfaithful lover as she is ashamed that others would find out.
Edith Piaf’s version is about meeting a stranger in the middle of a crowd and experiencing love at first sight. But as the crowd is moving, the lovers are separated as fast as they were brought together. They never meet again. It is a metaphor for destiny playing lovers against each other.

Je revois la ville en fête
et en délire
Suffoquant sous le soleil
et sous la joie
Et j’entends dans la musique
les cris, les rires
Qui éclatent et rebondissent autour de moi

Et perdue parmi ces gens
qui me bousculent
Étourdie, désemparée,
je reste là
Quand soudain, je me retourne,

Me transperce et rejaillit

qui me vole

I remember the town partying
and in a delirious state
suffocating in the heat
and bursting with joy
And I hear the music
the cries and the laughter
bursting and bouncing
all around me

And lost among these people
pushing me around
dizzy and without directions
I am there
When suddenly, I turn around
He takes a step back
and the crowd throws me
in his arms

Carried away by the crowd
dragging us
leading us, crushed against each other.
We form one single body
and the flow effortlessly pushes us to be chained to one another
and leaves us both beaming,
tipsy and happy

Swept away by the crowd
that rushes towards
and dances a mad farandole
Our two hands remain linked
and sometimes raised,
our two bodies embrace
fly away
and land, radiant
tipsy and happy

And the joy splattered by his
smile,
gets through me and rises again
deep inside me.
But suddenly, … I scream
among the laughter
When the crowd comes to tear him away
between my arms.

Carried away by the crowd
dragging us
leading us, taking us apart
from each other.
I struggle and battle
But the sound of my voice
is muffled by the laughter
of others
and I scream, in pain, of fury
and of rage, and I cry

And swept away by the crowd
launching itself
and dancing a crazy farandole.
I am dragged far away
and I clench my fists
cursing the crowd
who steals from me,
The man it had given to me
Who I never found again.
