Que reste-t-il de nos amours ? – Charles Trenet

This is a 1943 jazz classic from the French singer-songwriter Charles Trenet
The song has been covered by dozens of French and International artists from all genres.
Including Chrissie Hynde for the original version, Sam Cooke, Patricia Kaas and Rod Stewart for the English version, Nat King Cole and Boris Vian for the jazz version.
It has also been translated in numerous languages, including Portuguese, Arabic, Polish and Italian. And often features in movies and TV programmes.

It is a cheerful and romantic love song. Reminiscing about long-lost loves and past youth.
« Que reste-t-il de nos amours? (What is left of our love)
|que reste-t-il de ces beaux jours, (What is left of those beautiful days)
une photo, vieille photo, (A photograph, old photograph)
de ma jeunesse. (from my youth)
Que reste-t-il des billets doux, (What’s left of our love letters)
des mois d’avril, (of the April months)
des rendez-vous, (of the dates)
un souvenir qui me poursuit, (A souvenir that haunts me)
sans cesse… ». (relentlessly)

Ce soir, le vent qui frappe à ma porte
Me parle des amours mortes
Devant le feu qui s’éteint
Ce soir, c’est une chanson d’automne
Dans la maison qui frissonne
Et je pense aux jours lointains

Que reste-t-il de nos amours ?
Que reste-t-il de ces
beaux jours ?
Une photo, vieille photo
De ma jeunesse
Que reste-t-il des billets doux ?
Des mois d’avril, des rendez-vous ?
Un souvenir qui me poursuit
Sans cesse

Bonheur fané, cheveux au vent
Baisers volés, rêves mouvants
Que reste-t-il de tout cela ?
Dites-le moi

Un p’tit village, un vieux clocher
Un paysage si bien caché
Et dans un nuage, le cher visage
De mon passé

Les mots, les mots tendres qu’on murmure
Les caresses les plus pures
Les serments au fond des bois
Les fleurs qu’on retrouve
dans un livre
Dont le parfum vous enivre
Se sont envolés, pourquoi ?

Que reste-t-il de nos amours ?
Que reste-t-il de ces
beaux jours ?
Une photo, vieille photo
De ma jeunesse
Que reste-t-il des billets doux ?
Des mois d’avril, des
rendez-vous ?
Un souvenir qui me poursuit
Sans cesse

Bonheur fané, cheveux au vent
Baisers volés, rêves mouvants
Que reste-t-il de tout cela ?
Dites-le moi

Un p’tit village, un vieux clocher
Un paysage si bien caché
Et dans un nuage, le cher visage
De mon passé
De mon passé

Tonight, the wind knocking on my door
tells me about forgotten love
in front of the dying fire
Tonight is an autumnal song

in the shuddering house
And I think about the distant days.

What is left of our loves?
What is left of these
beautiful days?
A photo, old photo,
from my youth.
What’s left of the love letters
of the april months, of the trysts,
a memory that haunts me
constantly

Faded happiness, wind-swept hair
stolen kiss, fleeting dream,
What is left of all this?
Tell me.

A small village, an old bell tower,
a landscape so well hidden
and in a cloud, the dear face
of my past.

Words, the tenderly
whispered words
The purest caresses,
Oaths deep in the woods
and flowers found
between the pages of a book
whose perfume intoxicates you
have drifted away. Why?

What is left of our loves?
What is left of these
beautiful days?
A photo, old photo
from my youth.
What is left of the love letters ?,
of the months of April, of the trysts,
a memory that haunts me
all the time

Faded happiness, wind-swept hair
stolen kiss, emotional dreams.
What is left? Of all this,
Tell me.

A small village, an old bell tower,
a landscape so well hidden
and in a cloud, the dear face
of my past.
of my past.
