Emmenez moi – Charles Aznavour (Les enfoirés)

This is a 1967 pop song by the French singer-songwriter Charles Aznavour.
The song has become of a classic at the concert of “Les enfoirés”, a fundraiser for food banks and the homeless.

An anthem to freedom and escapism. The song is about the longing to go far away and escape everyday’s misery.
Sung from the point of view of a docker, stuck in a monotonous life under the grey sky in Northern France.

One of the key sentences of the song is “Il me semble que la misère serait moins pénible au soleil ” (It seems to me that misery would be less taxing under the sun)
“Vers les docks où le poids et l’ennui (At the docks, where the burden and the boredom)
Me courbent le dos” (break my back)

“Ils viennent du bout du monde (They come from the end of the world) Apportant avec eux (Bearing) Des idées vagabondes” (wandering thoughts)

“Moi qui n’ai connu toute ma vie (the only thing I’ve known throughout my life) Que le ciel du nord (The Northern sky)
J’aimerais débarbouiller ce gris (I would like to erase the grey)
En virant de bord” (By changing tack)

The narrator later talks about his dreams
“Prenant la route qui mène (Taking the road that leads to)
A mes rêves d’enfant (my childhood dreams)
Sur des îles lointaines (on faraway islands)
Où rien n’est important (Where nothing else matters)
Que de vivre” (Other than living life)

“Je fuirais laissant là mon passé (I will run away from my past)
Sans aucun remords (without any remorse)
Sans bagage et le coeur libéré (without any luggage, with a free heart)
En chantant très fort” (and singing very loudly)

M’enlève et me dépose
Un merveilleux été
Sur la grève

Où je vois tendant les bras
L’amour qui comme un fou
Court au devant de moi
Et je me pends au cou
De mon rêve

Quand les bars ferment,
que les marins
Rejoignent leur bord
Moi je rêve encore jusqu’au matin
Debout sur le port

Emmenez-moi au bout de la terre
Emmenez-moi
au pays des merveilles
Il me semble que la misère
Serait moins pénible au soleil

Un beau jour sur
un rafiot craquant
De la coque au pont
Pour partir je travaillerais dans
La soute à charbon

Prenant la route qui mène
A mes rêves d’enfant
Sur des îles lointaines
Où rien n’est important
Que de vivre

Où les filles alanguies
Vous ravissent le c? ur
En tressant m’a t’on dit
De ces colliers de fleurs
Qui enivrent

Je fuirais laissant là mon passé
Sans aucun remords
Sans bagage
et le coeur libéré
En chantant très fort

Emmenez-moi au bout de la terre
Emmenez-moi
au pays des merveilles
Il me semble que la misère
Serait moins pénible au soleil…

To the docks where the burden and the boredom
Break my back.
They come in, their belly heavy
with fruits, the boats.

They come from the end
of the world
importing along with them
wandering thoughts
with glints of blue skies
and illusions

Dragging along a peppery scent
from unknown countries
and some eternal Summers
where people live almost naked
on the beaches.

I have known all my life, nothing
But the northern sky.
I would like to wash this grey away
by changing tack.

Take me away to the end
of the earth
Take me to the
wonderland.
It seems to me that misery
would be less of a pain in the sun

In the bars when the day fades,
with the sailors,
We talk about girls and
love
a glass in our hands

I lose track of things
and suddenly, my thoughts
picks me up and drops me down
in wonderful summers
on the shore

Where I see, stretching its arm
love like a fool
running towards me
and I cling to the neck
of my dream

when the bars close
and the sailors
go back on board
I dream until the morning
Stood up on the harbour.

Take me to the end of the earth
Take me
to the wonderland
It seems to me that misery
would be less of a pain in the sun

A beautiful day on
a creaking boat
from the hull to the deck.
To leave, I will work in
The coal bunker.

Taking the route that leads
to my childhood dreams
on distant islands
where nothing else matters
than to live life.

Where languorous girls
enchant your heart
whilst braiding, so I was told, necklaces of flowers
That makes your head spin

Letting go of my past
without any remorse.
without any luggage
and with a free heart
Whilst singing very loudly.

Take me to the end of the earth
Take me
to the wonderland
It seems to me that misery.
would be less of a pain in the sun
