Je suis comme je suis – Jacques Prévert (Juliette Gréco)

This is a 1946 literary song composed by Joseph Kosma and written by the French poet Jacques Prévert.
Many singers have covered the song in French, but the most famous one is from Juliette Gréco.

It may surprise many to find the song was written by a man, as it is a bold declaration of female independence, self-acceptance and unapologetic individuality.
And defies all norms of the time (1940’s) by portraying a woman with unashamed sexual freedom and personal choice. Demonstrating a strong refusal to be cowed and submit to inequalities.

Some expressions in context:

“Je suis faite pour plaire” (I am made to please / I am made to seduce.)
The verb plaire in French has several meanings, which leaves some ambiguity on the introduction and chorus line, and could change the meaning of the song.

“Et puis après” literally translates as and then after.
The expression in French is often used in a defiant tone. Translating to English as “So what?”

“Je ris aux éclats” literally translates as I laugh to shatter.
This is another common French idiom that would translate as to roar with laughter.

Je suis faite pour plaire
Et n’y puis rien changer
Mes lèvres sont trop rouges
Mes dents trop bien rangées
Mon teint beaucoup trop clair
Mes cheveux trop foncés

Et puis après
Qu’est-ce que ça peut vous faire
Je suis comme je suis
Je plais à qui je plais
Je suis comme je suis
Je suis faite comme ça

Quand j’ai envie de rire
Oui, je ris aux éclats
J’aime celui qui m’aime
Est-ce ma faute à moi
Si ce n’est pas le même
Que j’aime chaque fois

Je suis comme je suis
Je suis faite comme ça
Que voulez-vous de plus
Que voulez-vous de moi

Qu’est-ce que ça peut vous faire
Ce qui m’est arrivée
Oui, j’ai aimé quelqu’un
Et quelqu’un m’a aimée
Comme les enfants qui s’aiment
Simplement savent aimer
Aimer, aimer

Pourquoi me questionner
Je suis là pour vous plaire
Et n’y puis rien changer
Je suis comme je suis
Je suis faite comme ça

Quand j’ai envie de rire
Oui, je ris aux éclats
J’aime celui qui m’aime
Est-ce ma faute à moi
Si ce n’est pas le même
Que j’aime chaque fois

Je suis comme je suis
Je suis faite comme ça
Que voulez-vous de plus
Que voulez-vous de moi

I am made to seduce
and can’t change a thing.
My lips are too red,
my teeth too neat,
my complexion much too light,
My hair too dark.

And so what,
What does it matter to you?
I am what I am,
I please to whom fancies me
I am what I am.
I’m made like that

When I feel like laughing.
Yes, I laugh out loud.
I love the one who loves me.
Is it my fault
if it is not the same
that I love each time?

I am what I am.
I’m made like that.
What more do you want?
What do you expect of me?

What does it matter to you
What happened to me?
Yes, I loved someone
and someone loved me
like children in love
simply wanting love
To love, love.

Why do you ask me?
I am here to seduce you
and could not change a thing.
I am what I am.
I’m made like that.

When I feel like laughing,
I roar with laughter
I love the one who loves me.
And is it my fault if
it is not the same
that I love each time?

I am what I am,
I am made like that.
What more do you want?
What do you expect from me?
