This is a 1986 ballad composed and written by the French singer-songwriter Jean-Jacques Goldman for the Belgian singer Johnny Hallyday.
This is not a love song per se. It is written from the point of view of a man, in lust with a woman, with the possible and optional hope for love and a long-term relationship.
The music is set to follow the beat of sexual intercourse, starting softly with a strong crescendo (to orgasm) and falling softer and flatter again in a post-coital bliss full of hope and promises.
The hope for love and a long-term relationship is demonstrated in the lyrics by promises of love, assurances and filled with commitment. Sentences such as “Je te promets la clé des secrets de mon âme” (I promise you the key to the secrets of my soul). “Je te promets la vie de mes rires à mes larmes” (I promise you life from my laughter to my tears). “Je te promets mes bras pour porter tes angoisses” (I promise you my arms to carry your anxieties)
But the reality of lust vs love also kicks in, with sentences such as “Je te promets un moment de fievre et de douceurs. Pas toute la vie, mais quelques heures” (I promise you a moment of fever and tenderness. Not for life, but maybe for a few hours). “Même si je mens” (Even if I am lying). “Des heures incandescentes et des minutes blanches. Des secondes insouciantes au rythme de tes hanches” (Burning hours and blank minutes. Carefree seconds to the rhythm of your hips)
Those feelings are tainted by past disappointment from love and fueled by resilience.
“Je te promets une histoire différente des autres. J’ai tant besoin d’y croire encore” (I promise you a different story from the others. I really need to believe it in … again)
“Et même si c’est pas vrai, si on te l’a trop fait (And even if it is not true, you have been done for too often)
Si les mots sont usés, comme écrits à la craie (If those words are worn out and written in chalk)
On fait bien des grands feux en frottant des cailloux (One can light a great fire by rubbing two rocks).
Peut-être avec le temps à la force d’y croire (So, maybe with time and strength of believing it)
On peut juste essayer pour voir” (We can simply try and see)
Je te promets le sel
Au baiser de ma bouche
Je te promets le miel
À ma main qui te touche
Je te promets le ciel
Au-dessus de ta couche
Des fleurs et des dentelles
Pour que tes nuits soient douces
Je te promets la clé
Des secrets de mon âme
Je te promets la vie
De mes rires à mes larmes
Je te promets le feu
À la place des armes
Plus jamais des adieux
Rien que des aurevoirs
J’y crois comme à la terre
J’y crois comme au soleil
J’y crois comme un enfant
Comme on peut croire au ciel
J’y crois comme à ta peau
À tes bras qui me serrent
J’te promets une histoire
Différente des autres
J’ai tant besoin d’y croire encore
Je te promets des jours
Tous bleus comme tes veines
Je te promets des nuits rouges
Comme tes rêves
Des heures incandescentes
Et des minutes blanches
Des secondes insouciantes
Au rythme de tes hanches
Je te promets mes bras
Pour porter tes angoisses
Je te promets mes mains
Pour que tu les embrasses
Je te promets mes yeux
Si tu ne peux plus voir
J’te promets d’être heureux
Si tu n’as plus d’espoir
J’y crois comme à la terre
J’y crois comme au soleil
J’y crois comme un enfant
Comme on peut croire au ciel
J’y crois comme à ta peau
À tes bras qui me serrent
J’te promets une histoire
Différente des autres
Si tu m’aides à y croire encore
Et même si c’est pas vrai
Si on te l’a trop fait
Si les mots sont usés
Comme écrits à la craie
On fait bien des grands feux
En frottant des cailloux
Peut-être avec le temps
À la force d’y croire
On peut juste essayer pour voir
Et même si c’est pas vrai
Même si je mens
Si les mots sont usés
Légers comme du vent
Et même si notre histoire
Se termine au matin
J’te promets un moment
De fièvre et de douceur
Pas toute la nuit
mais quelques heures
Je te promets le sel
Au baiser de ma bouche
Je te promets le miel
À ma main qui te touche
Je te promets le ciel
Au-dessus de ta couche
Des fleurs et des dentelles
Pour que tes nuits soient douces
I promise you salt
from the kiss of my mouth.
I promise you, honey
from the touch of my hand
I promise you heaven
above your bed.
Flowers and lace
to soften your nights.
I promise you the key
to the secrets of my soul
I promise you life
from my laughter to my tears.
I promise you fire
instead of weapons.
Never any farewells,
only simple goodbyes.
I believe in it like on earth,
I believe in it like under the sun.
I believe in it like a child
as one believes in heaven.
I believe in it like your skin,
with your arms hugging me.
I promise you a story
different from the others.
I so need to believe in it again.
I promise you days
blue like your veins.
I promise you nights
red as your dreams.
Burning hours
and blank minutes.
Carefree seconds
to the rhythm of your hips.
I promise you my arms
to carry your anxieties.
I promise you my hands
for you to kiss.
I promise you my eyes
If you couldn’t see anymore.
I promise to be happy on your behalf
If you have lost hope
I believe in it like on earth,
I believe in it like under the sun.
I believe in it like a child
As one believes in heaven.
I believe in it like in your skin,
when your arms hug me
I promise you a story
different from the others.
If you help me believe in it again
And even if it’s not true
If you’ve been done too often
If the words are worn out
and written with chalk
One can light a great fire
by rubbing two rocks
maybe with time
with the strength of believing in it
We can just try and see.
And even if it’s not true,
even if I lie
If the words are worn out
light as wind.
And even if our story
ends in the morning,
I promise you a moment
of fever and tenderness,
Not all my life
But a few hours.
I promise you the salt
to the kiss of my mouth.
I promise you, honey
to the touch of my hand
I promise you heaven
above your bed.
Flowers and lace
to soften your nights
