La Javanaise- Serge Gainsbourg

This is a 1963 baroque pop song that the French singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg wrote for Juliette Gréco.
It was recorded by both artists and has been covered later by Jane Birkin, Iggy Pop and many jazz artists.
This particular version is a duo between Bernard Lavilliers & Adrienne Pauly.

The song tells a short lust story between two people and the longing for more from one person.
The javanaise is a play on words from the word java (a type of dance) with an added syllable to make a word up. Parisian slang at the time used to add the syllable “av” to every word. Here Serge Gainsbourg purposefully used existing words with “av” to reinforce the wordplay.
And an euphemism for a short, fleeting romantic relationship.

The author states he had been heartbroken:
“J’avoue j’en ai bavé (I confess I have been through hell)
pas vous (What about you)
Mon amour (My love)
Avant d’avoir eu vent de vous” (Before I ever heard about you)
En baver is an informal French expression to express going through hardship. It translates literally as “to drool”
Avoir vent de means to get wind of something, or in this case, to have heard of/about someone.

The short-lived and physical nature of the relationship:
“Ne vous déplaise (With all due respect)
En dansant la Javanaise (Whilst dancing the Javanaise)
Nous nous aimions (We loved each other)
Le temps d’une chanson” (Just for the duration of a song)
Déplaire means to dislike. But it is used in this context as “if you don’t mind”, or, delving more into context, “with all due respect”, as the song uses an informal form of you. Enhancing the notion of distance or coldness between the two partners.

The unfulfilled desire:
“À votre avis qu’avons-nous vu (In your view, what have we seen)
De l’amour (of love)
De vous à moi vous m’avez eu (Between you and me, you led me on)
Mon amour” (my love)
“Hélas avril en vain me voue (Halas, in April I am destined)
À l’amour (for love)
J’avais envie de voir en vous (I wanted to find in you)
Cet amour” (that love)

J’avoue, j’en ai bavé, pas vous
Mon amour?
Avant d’avoir eu vent de vous
Mon amour
Ne vous déplaise
En dansant la Javanaise
Nous nous aimions
Le temps d’une
Chanson

À votre avis, qu’avons-nous vu
De l’amour?
De vous à moi, vous m’avez eu
Mon amour
Ne vous déplaise
En dansant la Javanaise
Nous nous aimions
Le temps d’une
Chanson

Hélas, avril en vain me voue
À l’amour
J’avais envie de voir en vous
Cet amour
Ne vous déplaise
En dansant la Javanaise
Nous nous aimions
Le temps d’une
Chanson

La vie ne vaut d’être vécue
Sans amour
Mais c’est vous qui l’avez voulu
Mon amour
Ne vous déplaise
En dansant la Javanaise
Nous nous aimions
Le temps d’une
Chanson

I confess, I have been through hell
What about you my love ?
Before I even heard of you
my love
With all due respect,
while dancing the Javanese
we loved each other
just for the duration of a
song

In your view, what have we seen
of love
from you to me, you led me on
my love
with all due respect
whilst dancing the Javanese.
We loved each other
just the duration of a
song.

Alas April dedicates me in vain
to love.
I wanted to find in you
that love.
with all due respect
whilst dancing the Javanese.
We loved each other
just the duration of a
song.

Is life worth living
without love ?
But it was your wish
my love.
With all due respect
whilst dancing the Javanese.
We loved each other
just the time of a
song.
