Le Chanteur- Daniel Balavoine

This is a 1978 glam-rock song by the French singer-songwriter Daniel Balavoine.
It makes a sarcastic and cynical criticism of the music industry.

The lyrics tell the story of the rise and (fatalistic) fall of a pop star throughout his career.
Starting with the young and aspiring artist:
“J’me présente, je m’appelle Henri (Let me introduce myself, my name is Henry)
Je voudrais bien réussir ma vie, être aimé (I would like to be successful, and be loved)
Être beau, gagner de l’argent (To be beautiful and make money)
Puis surtout être intelligent (And above all, to be intelligent)
Mais pour tout ça il faudrait que j’bosse à plein temps” (But for all this, I would have to work full time)

And then struggling to rise to fame: “J’suis chanteur, je chante pour mes copains (I am a singer, I sing for my mates) J’veux faire des tubes et que ça tourne bien, tourne bien (I want to make smash hits and that it turns out well, spins well) J’veux écrire une chanson dans le vent (I want to write a trendy song) Un air gai, chic et entraînant (A cheerful, chic and catchy tune) Pour faire danser dans les soirées de Monsieur Durand” (to make people dance at Joe Blogg’s soirées) “Un tube” in French is an informal word for music hits. “Dans le vent” translates literally as in the wind but it is an informal French expression for trendy. “Monsieur Durand” is often used to describe an average man, similar to Joe Bloggs in English.

Now moving to delusions of grandeur or megalomania:
“Et partout dans la rue (And everywhere on the streets)
J’veux qu’on parle de moi (I want to be talked about)
Que les filles soient nues (That all the women are naked)
Qu’elles se jettent sur moi (And throwing themselves at me)
Qu’elles m’admirent, qu’elles me tuent (That they admire or kill me)
Qu’elles s’arrachent ma vertu (That they strip me of my virtue)
Pour les anciennes de l’école (For the old-schoolers)
Devenir une idole (To become their idols)
J’veux que toutes les nuits (I want that every night,)
Essoufflées dans leurs lits (Breathless in their bed)
Elles trompent leurs maris (They cheat on their husbands)
Dans leurs rêves maudits” (In their godforsaken dreams)

The high rise:
“Puis après je ferai des galas (And after that, I will play at gala evenings)
Mon public se prosternera devant moi (My public will worship at my feet)
Des concerts de cent mille personnes (Concerts for a 100,000 people)
Où même le tout-Paris s’étonne (Where even the Parisian jet-set is blown away)
Et se lève pour prolonger le combat” (And stands to keep the struggle alive)

The beginning of the end:
“Puis quand j’en aurai assez (Then, when I am tired of it)
De rester leur idole (Of being their idols)
Je remonterai sur scène (I will get back on stage)
Comme dans les années folles (as in the Roaring 20’s)
Je ferai pleurer mes yeux (I will make my eyes cry)
Je ferai mes adieux (I will bid my farewell)
Et puis l’année d’après (And the year after that)
Je recommencerai (I will do it all again)
Je me prostituerai (I will prostitute myself)
Pour la postérité” (For posterity)

The fall:
“Les nouvelles de l’école (The young kids on the block)
Diront que j’suis pédé (Will say that I am queer)
Que mes yeux puent l’alcool (That you can smell the drink from my eyes)
Que j’fais bien d’arrêter (That I would better stop)
Brûleront mon auréole (They will burn my halo)
Saliront mon passé” (And taint my history)

The desperate end:
“Alors je serai Dieu (Then I will be God)
Et je pourrai crever (And I could croak)
Je me chercherai un Dieu (I will look for a God)
Pour tout me pardonner (To forgive me for everything)
J’veux mourir malheureux (I want to die miserable)
Pour ne rien regretter (So I don’t regret anything)

This particular video was the first time Daniel Balavoine sang the song on mainstream media, and he was not yet well-known in the show business industry. The video was taken during a popular entertainment show on prime-time television and gathered many famous people of the time. Most guests of the programmes, successful singers of the time, seem to find it difficult to deal with some very harsh home-truths captured in the song. This includes Jane Birkin (who remained humble throughout her career), and looked particularly embarrassed towards the end of the performance.

Je m’présente,
je m’appelle Henri
J’voudrais bien réussir ma vie
Être aimé, être beau,
gagner de l’argent
Puis surtout être intelligent
Mais pour tout ça il faudrait
que j’bosse à plein temps

J’suis chanteur,
je chante pour mes copains
J’veux faire des tubes
et que ça tourne bien,
tourne bien
J’veux écrire une
chanson dans le vent
Un air gai, chic et entraînant
Pour faire danser
dans les soirées de Monsieur Durand

Et partout dans la rue
J’veux qu’on parle de moi
Que les filles soient nues
Qu’elles se jettent sur moi
Qu’elles m’admirent,
qu’elles me tuent
Qu’elles s’arrachent ma vertu

Pour les anciennes de l’école
Devenir une idole
J’veux que toutes les nuits
Essoufflées dans leurs lits
Elles trompent leurs maris
Dans leurs rêves maudits

Puis après je f’rai des galas
Mon public se prosternera
devant moi
Des concerts de
cent mille personnes
Où même le tout-Paris
s’étonne
Et se lève pour prolonger le combat

Et partout dans la rue
J’veux qu’on parle de moi
Que les filles soient nues
Qu’elles se jettent sur moi
Qu’elles m’admirent,
qu’elles me tuent
Qu’elles s’arrachent ma vertu

Puis quand j’en aurai assez
De rester leur idole
Je remont’rai sur scène
Comme dans les années folles
Je f’rai pleurer mes yeux
Je ferai mes adieux

Et puis l’année d’après
Je recommencerai
Et puis l’année d’après
Je recommencerai
Je me prostituerai
Pour la postérité

Les nouvelles de l’école
Diront que j’suis pédé
Que mes yeux
puent l’alcool
Que j’ferais mieux d’arrêter
Brûleront mon auréole
Saliront mon passé

Alors je serai vieux
Et je pourrai crever
Je me cherch’rai un Dieu
Pour tout me pardonner
J’veux mourir malheureux
Pour ne rien regretter
J’veux mourir malheureux

Let me introduce myself,
My name is Henry.
I would like to be successful
to be loved, to be beautiful,
make money,
and above all, be intelligent.
But for all this, I would have
to work full time.

I am a singer,
I sing for my mates.
I want to make smash hits
and that it I it turns out well,
spins well
I want to write a
trendy song,
a cheerful, chic and catchy tune
to make people dance

at Joe Blogg’s soirées

And everywhere on the street,
I want to be talked about,
for the girls to be naked,
that they throw themselves at me,
that they admire me,
that they kill me,
that they strip away my virtue

For the old schoolers
to become their idol.
I want that every night
breathless in their bed.
They cheat on their husbands
in their godforsaken dream.

Then after, I’ll play at galas,
My public will worship
at my feet
Concerts of
100,000 people
where even the Parisian jet-set is blown away
and stand up to keep the struggle alive

And everywhere on the street,
I want to be talked about,
for the girls to be naked,
that they throw themselves at me,
that they admire me,
that they kill me
that they strip me of my virtue

Then, when I’m tired
of being their idol,
I will get back on stage
as in the Roaring Twenties,
I will make my eyes cry.
I will bid my farewell

And then the year after,
I will do it again.
And then the following year,
I will do it again.
I will prostitute myself
for posterity.

The new kids on the block
will say that I’m queer,
that you can smell the drink from my eyes
that I’d better stop
will burn my halo.
will taint my past.

Then I will be old,
and I can die.
I will look for a God
to forgive me for everything.
I want to die miserable
so as not to regret anything.
I want to die miserable.
